Advent 2017 :: Day 16

Just over a year ago I joined an organisation called "Free Cakes for Kids" where volunteer bakers make birthday cakes etc for children, and sometimes adults, who might otherwise not have a cake on their birthday. Since then I've baked quite a few cakes and it is always a delight to see the smiles on faces and how much they are apppreciated. Baking a cake seems like such a small gesture but it can make a difference when life is hard.

This month a big cake was needed for a Christmas party at a children's centre in Cambridge, so I put my hand up and volunteered.

And this is what I came up with... well I still had lots of that navy icing to use up!

  5. That is a great thing to do. It must be lovely for deprived children to get one of your cakes as a birthday surprise. A memory that will be etched on their minds forever and no doubt they will tell their children and in time grandchildren about the year when they got this fabulous cake..... you have brought a smile to my face with this gesture. Thank you from Irene in Northern Ireland

  9. What a wonderful idea and how rewarding it would be to see the delight on the face of the recipient. Will you continue with this even though you have stopped baking cakes?

  10. As a volunteer for Young Carer's I witness first hand what it means for these children to be presented with a cake. Lovely cake Gina and a lovely gesture. Up to 20 dozen mince pies and never want to see another one! Do you agree that they are very labour intensive and people really don't tend to credit the amount of work in each pesky little pie! Grrrrr! Have a great and hopefully restful Sunday Gina x
