Sunday Soup

I'm cold! The weather has changed and it feels distinctly Autumnal.
  • I've actually worn thick tights three times this week - the season for bare legs has definitely passed.
  • I've started making porridge for breakfast every morning rather than fruit and yoghurt.
  • So far, I've resisted putting on the heating  but I'm weakening... and we might even light a fire this evening.
  • Today I decided it is time for soup for lunch once more

Spiced pumpkin soup with a dash of creme fraiche... tasting all the better for having grown the pumpkins myself! And despite feeling cold I do actually enjoy the change in the seasons and the change in routines. Different clothes, different food, different pastimes... what do you enjoy about Autumn?

  1. Fire yes. Tights yes. Soup yes. Thick jumper yes. I LOVE this time of year but it does seem to have hit us all with a mighty boom. Can't wait til the nights start getting darker and the leaves are blowing about the streets.

  2. Just the colours really and boots I suppose...I do love boots! However I'm not fond of this time of year from now until the end of December. I'm a spring/ summer person I'm afraid.
Well done on growing your own pumpkins, something I've never done!

  3. I could do with a bowl of your soup - it looks delicious. I don't like parting with summer but once autumn arrives I quite like drawing the curtains early and settling down to a relaxing evening reading, sewing or viewing, and it's the perfect excuse to cook tasty casseroles with winter veggies.

  4. This year I don't mind autumn arriving as we've had a nice summer, whereas last year I felt cheated of summer then autumn arrived. I love the colours of autumn that I see when Im out and about for work and also warming casseroles :-)

  5. I'm resisting any heating too, just adding an extra layer of clothing instead. Your soup looks delicious. If summer has to end I look forward to the smells that autumn brings and like Heather, cooking tasty meals again.

  6. Love this time of year- veggie soups, stews, cottage pie and the occasional hot pud. But what I really like are the misty mornings and wonderful evening skies and that 'start of something New' feeling left over from years of working to an academic year.

  7. I am resisting the heating switch too, far too early for my liking. I was so cold that I made Bombay Aloo to warm me up.

  8. We have enjoyed a blazing fire today, living dangerously as the chimney needs sweeping.
Planting bulbs at this time of year always seems such an optimistic thing to do and I always pat myself on the back in spring when all that effort pays off,

  9. I've added layers of clothes as the day's gone on trying to avoid the heating switch. We've also boiled up our first batch of chutney - apple and plum. At least we kept warm while the chutney was bubbling.

  10. Blackberries! I'm obsessed...

  11. Seems silly, here we are heading into Spring, wet and damp and lovely. I love autumn as down here in Oz our summers are so fierce, so I love the dhange from heat to cool and fires and casseroles etc, not exactly looking forward to a bushfire summer.

  12. Gina, this is a grand time of year, when the daylight hours are not yet too shortened, and the air is crisp and cooler and energizing.

Your soup looks good! I smiled at what you wrote about tights, as earlier today I was thinking that it was time to find some socks. However, the brilliant sunshine convinced me to wait another day, or two.

It was a grand day for a walk. Yesterday's visit to the farmers market sent me home with some beautiful little apples picked this season, rather than peaches, whose season I do believe has now concluded.

  13. Our heatings already on albeit with limited times and radiators. Autumn jobs include picking, preparing and freezing apples and pears. Pears in red wine are a must. The soup looks great.

  14. I have a pumpkin waiting to be made into something. Could be soup, could be pie. And yes, thick tights here too, but we have succumbed and put on the heating on low. I hate being cold and this old house takes forever to heat up once it has gone cold.

  16. Like you, I love the change of seasons. Happily, it's cooling off here too -- I'm looking forward to fall!

  17. My favourite fall soup is butternut squash. I had the a/c on just last week, so am holding off on the heat for the moment ... even opening the patio door for the last bursts of fresh (warm?) air. Suddenly darkening at 7:30 now :[ Not mentally ready for it this year. Wendy x
