Fold, Stitch and Stick

I've been making books.

I was taught how to make these lovely book structures by the very talented Heather Power who is actually a printmaker but also makes fabulous book structures. Although I have made several of them over the years I've never taught anyone else how to make them.

However, next month I'm teaching a class to our Guild called "Fold, Stitch and Stick"* on how to make these books... and it is one thing being able to make a book myself but a completely different matter showing someone else how to do it.

So I thought some practise was due to get the method clear in my head... and I've ended up with books of all sizes from 6" square to less than 3" square

And I've remembered how much I like to construct books.

I rarely do anything with them (I have a box full) but it is the process that fascinates me

I'm thinking it is about time I started using them!

I'm also wondering if I can go smaller...

But not this afternoon as I must dash... off to Chelmsford EG to give a talk this evening.

* If you are reading this and booked on this class let me know and I'll email you the requirements list!

  1. Matchbox size perhaps?!! You won't need any sketchbooks for a while and they'd make lovely Christmas presents. They are very stylish and yet another way of making a book that I didn't know about.

  5. ooh - what a gorgeous book binding Gina. I think it's called conscious competence being able to teach- being able to explain what you're doing - as opposed to unconscious competence! lol

  6. How come the samples I'm making for my bookmaking workshops don't look as classy as yours! This is a new variation on a structure I've tried before. May I use your photos to try and make one similar? I hate sounding like I want to copy someone's ideas but these are lovely so why not be up front and ask? Where you lead....I follow...if that's alright?

  7. You're very good at making them too!
Sometimes books are too nice to write in, I'm like that with bought books, I don't want to write in them incase I ruin them! Daft, I know! :)

  11. Well damn! I'd sign up for this class in a nano second if I lived within 100 miles of you.

  16. I'm fascinated by the combination of stitching and paper in these little books. They're so beautiful. I'm still utterly thrilled by the ones I've made using the technique you taught me earlier in the year.
