Very Clever Girls!

This is a bit of a picture heavy post but the Young Embroiderers have done such a brilliant job today I couldn't possibly leave anyone out. The plan was to make tote bags using up old furnishing fabrics, covering them with torn strips of organza and various scraps of lace and buttons etc. I was still stitching up my sample at 11.30 pm last night and was starting to have doubts that the girls would even get close to finishing a bag.

I should have known better! The one below is Charlie's which had lovely subtle shades of blue (despite how it appears in the photo) and reminded me of the sea.

This is Grace's bag...

Sophie's...

and Jemima's.

We had four new visiting members including two very talented 8 year olds. Francesca loved using my sewing machine...

and produced this stunning bag!

Although I hadn't thought the pattern through... a tote bag suitable for a 13 year old is a little on the big side for an 8 year old!

Bluebell's was a little long too... but still beautiful.

And there were more... Nikki's...

Danielle's...

and Annabel's.

And last but not least Abigail's and..

Heather's. Every single bag finished (with the exception of a few buttons and trims) and ready to use.

Goodness know what I'll have to come up with next - they just keep getting better and better! Well done girls - it's been a fantastic day.

  2. they are all brilliant and amazing that they completed them in a day and at age 8! alice and i have been working with our young group on creating a piece of fabric by adding random scraps and trims to a base cloth to create an all over effect, so not disimilar. it is very freeing for them and rather like painting with fabric. they will be making them into bags over the next few weeks(finger's crossed).
    enjoy your evening,
    warmest wishes
    ginny.
p.s. i can relate to your 11.30 finishing off sample comment!

  11. They must have worked so hard to get their bags finished by the end of the day, and with such stunning results too. You must be delighted with them all. It's good to know that the future of textile art and craft is in good hands.

  21. Gina,
You spent a day with Young Embroiderers and I spent it with the older variety! Well, not so old (as many were younger than me I think)but they were just as enthusiastic. There's great truth in the adage 'catch them young and you have them for life' I hope some of your 'girls' go from strength to strength. Given your support and motivation, I have no doubt about it. 22. Just lovely, I enjoyed the stripey/strippey notebook covers I made for a w/s a while back, love using up bits & pieces & turning them into something functional again.

  25. lucky them to have you to show and enthuse! Much more fun that needlework at school when I was that age - how to be a useful housewife! Mind you the dress I made for "O" levels did clothe my daughter eventually which gave me pleasure
