A Day Off...

from studying and a day in London instead. One of things we got to see yesterday was "The Hyperbolic Coral Reef" on display at the Hayward Gallery on the South Bank. This amazing display is a constantly growing crochet coral reef that was conceived in direct response to the plight of the world's coral reef which is diminishing at a rapid rate due to polution and global warming. A combination of science, art and handicraft - it was stunning! I hope I'm not breaking any rules by showing you my photographs but as I was allowed to take them I'm assuming it's okay to share them...

It's hard to believe that some of these are actually crochet! I don't have a list of the contributors but I do know that one of them is Helle Jorgensen who has a blog, so do pay a visit. The exhibition is on until August 17 if you happen to find yourself in the area - I can recommend it.

We finished off the day by going to the cinema to see this...

... which has to been one of the best films I've seen in a long time. Top marks for "feel good factor" and laughter so I definitely recommend this too. (I'm going with a friend to see it again on Tuesday!)

The only downside is that I can't stop humming Abba tunes all day today!

  1. That crochet is incredible! And I so want to see Mamma Mia but all my friends are on holiday at the moment :( and much as I'd love to go with Mr Locket it would end up costing an absolute fortune if we had to get a babysitter (even if we could find one!)

Never mind, I'm sure I'll get there one day!

  3. Love the Coral pictures. The orange one is my favourite, so vibrant and bright, looking full of life as Coral should be.
It sounds as if you had the kind of day off that all days off should be.

  4. That coral is amazing - such great colours and textures, and a great way to take a break from the books.

Ahh, so jealous about you seeing Mamma Mia. It looks like such a happy film! Was Ms Streep any good at the warbling though? I've already heard people ripping Mr Brosnan for his ropey voice.

  5. Nothing wrong with singing abba tunes all day, it has been known to happen chez Trash Towers for no apparent reason!

  6. I'm going to see mamma Mia on thursday, but its funny how its been slated by the critics and seems to be just about the most popular film of the year. I just want to see lovely Skopelos again!
(And even lovelier Colin Firth..I think thats why my mum wants to go..80 and fighting fit!)

  8. The reef is wonderful! Other contributors with websites (I'm sure you can find them via Google) are Ildiko Szabo (who lives in Liverpool) and Inge Hamilton (Ireland). And I especially loved Anita Bruce's ethereal starfish.

  14. What amazing coral!

Lucky you getting to see Mamma Mia (Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan? Someone hold me back!) - there's no way on earth I'd get Mr Cookie there, sigh. Maybe I can get him to babysit and go by myself, which would solve both the babysitting and the cost issues. Aha! (to continuw the Abba theme)
