Advent :: Day twenty one

Things are not going according to plan.
My washing mashine has broken and there is no engineer available until 31st December... I'm not happy! I'd just stripped all the bed linen ready for the extra bodies sleeping here over the holidays... not to mention the towels that were used to soak up all the leaking water that are now sitting grubby and soggy in the sink.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised as we have a bit of a history of appliances breaking the week before Christmas. First there was the year without the dishwasher which was more of an irritation than anything else... and then the year the oven actually exploded in the middle of cooking Christmas lunch (fortunately after the turkey was cooked) when we ended up with pan fried potatoes... not to mention when the boiler broke and we were left with no heating until the second week in January (as well as no washing machine that year either). But as both our microwave and vacuum cleaner gave up the ghost last week I thought we were safe for the rest of this year. Pah... that'll teach me! If you need me I'll be down at the river bank scrubbing sheets on a stone.
Bah Humbug!

  1. eek - you have a dreadful history with electrical appliances etc don't you Gina? funny how often you hear about these things happening at Christemas time - probably because it's the worst time of year for it to happen. My mum's cooker element died on Thursday. The lovely man ordered it and came round to fix it on Friday!

  2. Oh no Gina, I can't believe it. Why does it always happen to you at this time of year? Poor you, you'll have to send your menfolk to the launderette - it shouldn't be too busy at this time of year!
(Now I have a vision of Stewart and Dot Cotton in the launderette wearing Christmas jumpers and party hats.)

  3. Gina, what can one say, that is unimaginably awful, I really feel for you. Not sure about the launderette idea - I had to use one earlier in the year, when my washing machine broke down, it was a very strange place!

  4. Nothing worse, plus launderettes are so expensive and time consuming. If you lived nearer, I would be happy to do some washing for you.

  5. Your laundering in the river will be well rinsed if you are getting the weather we have at present - it's bucketing down. What a disaster with all that bedding to do before and after Christmas. I think a trip to the launderette might be on the cards.

  6. You are very welcome to bring them to me as I live not far away. I expect to see that basket on my doorstep this evening or tomorrow! I dread washing machine breakdowns.

  7. Oh. I am sorry, that is a most unfortunate situation in which to find yourself. Am sending positive vibes your way to soothe your spirit and fix the blasted machine. Ax

  8. Oh dear, I really do feel your pain!! The thing about appliances nowadays is that they are so technical that you can't even have a go at fixing them yourself, the way you used to be able to. Hopefully a solution will come your way but oh my goodness you do have a bit of a history, don't you!

  10. Omg Gina, you have really jinxed yourself this time. I agree a trip to the laundrette is in order. I had my stovetop blow up one year a week before Christmas when I was expecting 16 for Christmas day, that caused a major panic, but somehow we survived. Surely you will only have good luck from now on. Cheers

  11. Gina, sounds as if your appliances have some sort of solstice conspiracy pact. Do you ever attribute human nature to "things." I do, in a sort of joking mood that helps me to smile through some aggro.

Must be a "laundrette" somewhere round your area. Just hand over all those fabrics to the proprietors and let them let you know when all are clean, dry and folded.

A strange sort of Christmas gift, perhaps?

  12. Oh Gina! I am afraid that gave me a giggle, sorry but the thought of you on the riverbank washing was too much. I do hope you have a convenient laundromat.
    Merry Christmas!

  13. Oh bum! Not what you want this weekend.
The other comments got me wondering where our nearest laundrette would be? I'm not aware of one in any of the local towns.

  15. I'll meet you at the washing stones...Mine went bonkers yesterday also. I too have the towels and rugs to wash, stuff in the kitchen to return to the laundry, and more kids coming home tomorrow. Best wishes to you!

  16. Like I said, a conspiracy :-) I figure we have enough clothes for a fortnight wither that or I shall be begging the use of a friend's washer. Hope you get yours sorted out and fixed without too much bother. Ours is going to go to the great washing machine home in the skies (or the local recycling centre). I'm hoping for a result in the sales.

  17. Now that is rotten luck. Hang it all outside and let the weather deal with it? Our garden looks like it's going through a spin cycle at the mo :)

  18. I meant to leave a comment the day you posted this and then promptly forgot!
Reminds me of a friend of my mums who always managed to have her "sheets in the car" whenever she came to visit!
Just a thought...save you a bit of aggro!
Your Christmas cake looks beautiful; I'd bring my sheets with me if it Meant I could have a slice!

  19. I don't know if you've sorted out your washing machine but we'd be happy to loan you space in ours if you want to bring your washing over

Or, maybe hang it on the line with a sprinkle of washing powder and wait for the weather?? The rain and wind we've had must be equivalent to a thorough rinse and good vigorous spin!
