Advent :: Day one

A couple of weeks ago someone happened to mention they were looking forward to my advent posts. Oh... I thought I might not do it this year was my reply. But then I just happpened to notice that if I do a daily blog post throughout December as I have done for the past three years by the time we get to 24th December I will have written exactly 1000 posts. Got to be done really hasn't it? And if you stick with me throughout the month there will be recipes, possibly a tutorial or two and there could well be some sort of  giveaway to round up the celebrations .

This is a season of traditions and it has become something of a tradition for me to post a photo of our advent calendar on the 1st December each year. But this year I give you someone else's advent calendar.

This was a commission I made for a friend's daughter, which was delivered a couple of weeks ago. I had made one very similiar to our own, featuring angels, for her first daughter, so this was made to match but be slightly different. This time the hand appliqued panel features the three Kings delivering gifts.

But I don't like to break with tradition so I'll show you our calendar too... hanging up today with twenty four little bags filled with a daily chocolate treat for each of the adults in my house!

Are we the only house of adults who have an advent calendar?

  1. I love advent calenders but since all our children have grown up I don't bother with one. The Three Kings design is beautiful - I'm sure the lucky recipient will love it.

  4. I'm so glad that you decided against your original decision. Wow, 1000 posts by the end of the month, you put me to shame. A great Advent calendar, such a good idea with the hanging bags.

  6. Nooo. Alongside the loo roll advent calendar for the smalls is a tiny little reindeer calendar just for me. It still thrills me to open a door each morning in December.
    The Kings are beautiful.

  8. Only adults in our house now and no advent calendar, but I have promised to make one for myself for years. I won't get around to it this year, but maybe next year :) My daughter made one and although she does now have a baby, she admitted it was as much for her husband, as the baby.

  11. They're both lovely advent calendars. I can remember the excitement I used to feel before opening the window as a child, pictures only then, not chocolate!

  14. When my kids were little we had an Advent Tableau that I made. It was an empty stable (you can see where this is going) and had pockets with a character from the nativity scene (I think they had little velcro tabs - but I cannot remember) and each day the kids would get a character out of a pocket and put it on the scene. Now there were a lot of animals to make up the numbers but even so it was rather lovely.

    I don't remember where I got the pattern and sadly I don't have any photos. A shame because it was rather fun (well I enjoyed it anyway!)

  17. Like Su I remember opening the Advent Calendar doors to find tiny pictures, I've never had a chocolate one.

    I was planning a Drawing Advent project, but having just sat down after a very busy day I'm nit sure it will get off the ground!

  18. I don't think I have ever had an Advent calendar - but I could be wrong, I shall ask my daughter as her memory is better than mine.

  19. We have a Lego advent calendar (no commercialism here!), and each box has a small Lego piece to build (Santa/ planes/ reindeer). But we haven't used it for a couple of years now (now that we're all but one of us adults). Now I just use a countdown chalkboard to mark the days. I think if I had a chocolate-filled advent calendar our dog would have it torn apart and scarfed down the minute we left him home alone! Wendy
