Just When I thought I'd Finished

All my technical notes are filed, all my research is collated, my journal is written up, my sketchbook is finished and having finally got all five of my designs drawn up and presented on boards with my samples I thought I was finished and ready for degree moderation day on Saturday. But no... I couldn't leave it alone.

It is not a requirement that any of the designs are made up into actual garments, but I kept wondering what if...

And this is the result...

It has been no mean feat stitching cotton jersey without an overlocker and I wasn't sure it would ever get finished.
In true window dressing fashion I've got the back held together with a peg as it is too big for me, so I'll probably never wear it but I'm pleased I've made it as it is one thing to have a design on paper but quite another to actually see it made up. I think it would work in the hands of a more experienced dressmaker (who measures rather than guesses sizes) with an overlocker!

I'm pleased with the detail though...

especially the buttons

and the cuffs.

The question now is... was this a purely an academic exercise to satisfy my own curiosity or am I brave enough to take it along to moderation day? I'll probably change my mind ten times between now and Saturday!

  2. Love the fashion sketch!

My fave bit is the cuff with the buttons. I think it shows a lot of initiative to actually make up the garment. I know you'll make the right decision when the time comes.

  12. Gina - I think it is fantastic and you should definitely make one the right size for you and get wearing it. I am surprised you haven't got some fashion houses knocking on your door for the design. I think it would be a big seller!!! Well done!

  21. I'm glad to see someone else working till the very last minute. Don't you find that all the thinking and exercises come to a huge rush right at the end, and there is just so much in you that needs to come out. I think that you should indeed take your worked up design.

I had to have my work shipped - to be in the office TODAY. Didn't make that deadline - but tried to.

Thanks for sharing your JC work Gina, it's great.

Brilliant Gina, brilliant. I came to fancy textiles via dressmaking and there is nothing like the joy of wearing something unique! By the way, I have an overlocker if you ever want to use one again....

  29. It would be great if you could wear it, but if not then you must certainly take it along just to show how committed you are to your design work.

  30. I have questions: creating clothes in stretchy jersey sans overlocker and (not) made to measure - what's going on there then? Will you be going off the peg (I have some shaped like blackbirds if you require quirky and wish to remain on said peg)? And are you taking orders as I can relate to clothes that are too big these days as it would go nicely with my desigual skirt?
    Good stuff, girl, love it!!
