A Proposition

It's 10.30 pm. The phone rings...

Me: Hello?
Joe: Mum... I've got a proposition for you.
Me: A what?
Joe: A proposition.
Me: Go on...
Joe: Do you fancy some lobster?
Me: Lobster? What, now?
Joe: Nick (his friend) can get us some lobster... they're really cheap.
Me: Back of a lorry?
Joe: No, he gets them through work (he does work for a restaurant)... so what do you think? Do you fancy a couple?
Me: (To tired to really think through the reality of cooking lobster) Go on then...

The following morning... Bleary eyed I go to the fridge to get milk for my tea and I'm confronted by three of these beasts... and what's more they are actually moving!!! All I can think about is this...

There is no way I can put a live lobster in a pot of boiling water, but Joe cooked and prepared all three.

And this evening we had a fabulous lobster salad... perfect for this summer wet August evening. Delicious!

And for the vegetarians.....
....
...
....

Courgettes of course!

  1. you are funny. a very funny post. but a super good idea for the vegetarians. and fancy this: we are eating lobster for dinner tonight. they are at their lowest in price in many moons -- at $3.99 per pound (US) -- i just tried to calculate the conversion in my head but as you might imagine, my flame never did get fanned for math.....glad you had such a nice dinner gift. Oh, and, i can't put the little buggers in the water either; i just eat 'em.

  2. LOL! Love the vegetarian offering and as I'm allergic to lobster, I'll have to take that option!

  4. Lobsters always remind me too much of insects to be able to eat them (leaving aside the whole boiling water thing) but I love your veggie one!

  5. Lordy! That adds a whole new meaning to "living things" lurking in the fridge. Mine is usually mouldy cheese! xx

  8. Oh dear, how funny, and what a terrible shock in the morning! As you've read my blog you'll know I get my lobster cooked for me by my Son-out-law, but that's only since they stopped having them crawling round in a tank at the back of the restaurant. Now I just have courgettes crawling round the vegetable patch (actually this morning they are probably swimming!)

  9. Brilliant, I loved your story. Love the way the courgette was arranged on the plate. You didn't say how it all tasted?

    Have a good day ...

  10. The courgette/lobster is brilliant!

I've never cooked a lobster - would give it a go if I found three in my fridge!

  11. I loved the vegetarian lobster - it made me laugh out loud - but give me the real thing everytime. I remember the first time I tasted it - absolutely divine - bought directly from the fisherman and cooked in our holiday chalet on the east coast.

  13. I agree - I don't think I could actually plunge a living thing in to boiling water (although I WILL swat a wasp)it comes back to the old question of should you eat meat if you cannot kill it !?
What a fraud I am - I eat meat and love lobster - with THREE of them you could have called me up, I would have been round in five minutes!

  19. I don't think I could eat your veggie option either as the lobster's legs have been on the same plate - not really fussy - what!

  22. Hmm, what would Mr Darwin have to say about that courgette with legs? Evolution seems to be going in interesting directions to the South of Cambs.

Thanks for the fantastic laugh Gina.
