You may remember it was my intention to join in with this month's Cookery Calendar Challenge hosted by Penny by cooking from Yotam Ottolenghi's book Plenty. Of course, it is more likely you don't remember at all because why would you when even I forgot for most of the month... Too busy spinning plates!
So rather than try two new recipes from the book I've only actually tried one - a smoky frittata. However it was so good I made it twice in one week and we had again for lunch today. Usually I put potato in a frittata but this one has cauliflower and scamorsa, a type of smoked mozzerella (no, I'd never heard of it either) and although it sounds unusual, it was fabulous... a sort of smoky cauliflower cheese encased in eggs.
Wonderful with a salad for lunch. I did think I would make this Moroccan carrot salad to go with our frittata today but ran out of time this morning but there is always tomorrow.* I need to do something with the backlog of carrots that keep arriving in the veg box each week!
Given how short of time I seem to be at the moment I'm not publicly committing to choosing a new book to cook from in May but I've got one in mind if I get around to it... after all we've got to eat something!
Have a lovely weekend x
* I did indeed make the carrot salad for our lunch on Saturday, which like everything else I have made from this book was wonderful and went perfectly with the left over frittata. The only critisism of Ottolenghi's recipes is the very long list of ingredients which can be off putting... but always worth the effort.

Scarmosa is a new one on me...looks delicious though. :)
ReplyDeleteMmm, that sounds delicious, I always think Yotam's recipes look divine. Hope you have a good weekend. Short of time here too, tricky isn't it. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteI've had that book for a few years, and I must have cooked something from it but can't remember what! My Dad used to get frustrated with Mum's ever growing collection of books, and one day grabbed a stack, plonked them on the counter and said "cook something you've not tried before from one of these books every night this month". Went down well, as you can imagine...
ReplyDeleteI looks and sounds delicious. I must make more effort with my cooking. I ending up using up whatever needs eating from the fridge/freezer and hope it all goes together. A bit of a gamble but last night's weird concoction was OK.

ReplyDeleteIt's great to find a recipe that becomes a favourite. I do love Ottolenghi's restaurant food and used to have that book but many of his recipes are very ingredient heavy so I passed it on. Can recommend roasting carrots with garlic, orange and thyme.
ReplyDeleteThe frittata sounds very tasty and just the sort of meal I would like to cook and enjoy. I use cauliflower quite a lot so it would be a good alternative to potato for a change.
ReplyDeleteThat frittata does sound rather good. I think I may have seen it described in one of that chef's Guardian articles...or something similar, and also thought...that sounds rather good. Perhaps I will actually try to make it eventually! Thanks Gina! xo
ReplyDeleteLove the sound of that frittata. Delicious!
ReplyDeleteIt all sounds delicious. Cathy x
ReplyDeleteI must get my copy off my shelf and onto my counter top, thanks for the reminder. I'll go and do it now.
ReplyDeleteI am so far behind in blog reading since we had a marvellous week or so in Ayrshire.
Gina I am ortified it has taken me til now to visit and comment, truth being I suddenly realised this evening as I composed my next Cookery Challenge post that I had failed to visit Any of the kind bloggers who joined me this month. Family birthdays and Derek and I beig away for our Silver Wedding Anniversary knocked me off a bit, but I am embarrassed by my poor hosting skills. I have only ever heard good things about Plenty, and your frittata sounds really delicious, I do like frittata and make them reasonablt frequently. I hope you do manage to join this month but after my disgraceful hosting skills this month I have no right to expect it.....! x
