Five on Friday... A snapshot of my week

I'd like to report that I'm feeling perky and back to my usual self but I'm still struggling to pick myself up and get motivated...  I need someone to come and give me a good talking to! My foot has been painful this week too which doesn't help... and although I try to keep politics away from my blog I feel depressed at the news this morning in the UK. But nevertheless life goes on and this is a snapshot of just some of the things occupying my time over the past few days

1. Lavender

I don't teach my regular machine embroidery class in the summer term. I'm not sure why, it's historic. I inherited the class about eight years ago and was told they didn't do the summer term because the ladies liked to spend the summer in their gardens rather than stitching. Hard to believe looking out the window at the torrential rain as I start to write this post on Thursday, but I digress. So, once a month throughout the summer the ladies abandon their gardening to meet up for afternoon tea. On Tuesday I joined them at Hitchin Lavender, where I had a very nice buttered scone, bought a bag of lavender and came home inspired to make some lavender bags. There will be virtually no new artwork on the walls at my Open Studio this year but I'm hoping to divert attention from the fact by bribing visitors with cake, puppy cuddles and lavender bags!

2. Birthday Cakes

June... sigh...  Three family birthdays in the space of two weeks but I managed to get away with only two cakes. Son no. 3, Joe, has reached the grand age of 27... Husband no. 2, Stewart is a bit older than that (but still not as old as me as he likes to point out). Both had chocolate cakes. I'd had the idea for the anti gravity Guinness cake for a while but it looked a whole lot better in my head than the reality. But at least it still tasted good and they both enjoyed their cakes.

3. A Commission

There was a third birthday cake but this was not for family members. I was commissioned to make this cake several weeks ago by a couple who had found me through an advert. My brief was a square fruit cake for Nancy, a keen sportswoman who cycles and plays golf and her daughter Jade who is a play therapist...  Really... you want me to make a cake to incorporate all that? I confess I was stumped by this one for quite a while but eventually came up with the idea of a golf course with children playing in the bunker. The hand prints feature on Jade's promotional leaflet. I was a little taken aback when Nancy's Mum, who commissioned the cake expressed disappointment that I hadn't included a bicycle, but overall I think they were pleased. I hope so!

4. Brooches

Not much to say about these flower brooches. They are useful little projects for those odd spare moments and they are great for using up fabric scraps. More Open Studio fodder! I was thinking of writing up a little free tutorial for them... That of any interest to any of you? I don't think I've done this before but humour me if I have!

5. Puppy School

Do not be fooled by those innocent eyes... He is a pest! He was a star at puppy class last week... Good eye contact and sitting on command, very well behaved... Everyone thinks he's gorgeous. Then the minute he gets home he digs up my vegetable beds again... Naughty puppy! Back to school again this morning.
Wishing you all a good weekend.

  1. Busy as ever and with excellent results all round. Love the lavender bags. You could bribe me with cake, puppy cuddles and lavender bags any day of the week. Hope your ankle starts to feel more comfortable soon. Do you wear a support bandage or is that not recommended?

  3. Hoping your foot is soon completely healed. I admit to feeling not a little disappointed and shocked by the EU vote. Great cakes as usual though and cake and a gorgeous puppy always cheers the spirits!

  6. Your lavender bags are lovely as are the eyes of your little puppy 'pest'. Another here upset and saddened by today's news.

  7. The cakes look absolutely scrumptious as usual, particularly the chocolate one! Hector's behaviour sounds like children's - delightful at school or in company but tearaways at home, but it did make me laugh. Have a good week and Open Studios.

  8. More lovely makes. Really like the Lavendar bags. Hope your puppy behaves today. You have probably got a while to go before he is truly obedient :)

  13. Gina, lucky folks around your house to have all those June birthdays...the cakes are splendid! Very amusing to read the comment about the lack of bicycle...the playful cake has plenty going on.

I can easily imagine that the scent of those lavender bags is a lovely as the embroidery. Just wonderful.

How lucky am I to have one of your flower brooches! Best wishes on your upcoming open studio...with puppy. Something tells me that this year's open studio might be just a little bit different....

Happy Weekend to you, Gina! xo

  14. Spectacular cakes (oh my goodness, the first one...)and a puppy - love it!

The news is startling, isn't it? My son-in-law works in finance here in the US and is quite concerned. And pain is draining and tiring and wears us down, but hang in there. I hope it's gone by this time next week. Take care.

  16. Great cakes, love the Guinness one. Lavender sachets are always a welcome treat. Puppies are that way, but they generally grow out of it, unfortunately cats don't no matter how much training they've had.

  20. Good looking cakes but disappointing that the woman wanted a bicycle on the golf one. some people just expect too much.

Sorry to hear that your ankle hasn't fully healed yet.

  21. Glad that you are feeling better and that Hector is doing well in puppy class, even if not at home... Shame that the cake lady was disappointed, I would have been thrilled, sounds as if she had greater expectations than reality! I am sorry to be so late visiting, we had a minor domestic drama yesterday - nothing serious in the end, all ok - but I didn't get a change to do any blogging. Thank you so much for taking part in Five On Friday, I do appreciate it! Hope you are having a great weekend!

  22. Hi Gina, would love to make your brooches . We have a baby Cockapoo in the family and he is the devil in disguise so I feel for you. As for the missing bike on the cake- words fail me. Keep getting better. Good wishes , vera and kathleen

  23. Puppies are like little children, they know to be extra good in public but also know they can get away with a dose of naughtiness at home :-)
I think the Birthday cake commission is amazing and really doesn't need a bike. How would you know about the bike anyway? As for the Guinness cake, it is cool, it must be quite tricky to make a waterfall of Guinness. Have a lovely week. x

  24. A bike? A Bike?? The cake is totally amazing, how on earth could your customer be disappointed? Refer her to me for a good telling off! Your puppy is just scrumptious. We have a labrador too, and it took about two (maybe nearer three...) years for her to become truly docile, but she is such a wonderful addition to the family, we can't imagine life without her. X
