Looking Through Holes

As I delve deeper into my research I'm looking at photographs of old lace

I'm making drawings of the lace with a fine black pen and then cutting out selected areas. By laying the drawings over red paper the cut away areas stand out. I like the idea of partially revealing what is behind.

I'm still not certain where this is taking me but I'm having fun finding out

Thank you for all the good advice and concern about my voice which has now returned.

  3. Glad your voice has returned - trying to speak with a lost voice is strangely tiring.
Love your lace drawings and the whole idea of 'looking through'. I look forward to seeing where you go with these ideas.

I loved the engravings in the book so much, I wanted to be an illustrator when I grew up!

  6. The drawings are beautiful in themselves however the strong red certainly brings a new dimension to them.

  7. Always intrigued to see where you are taking your ideas. Black with red is a wonderful strong combination and this really works.Just read your comment about Beatrice Coron. That cape is made of tyvek. Going to give it a go?

  13. Black and white with Red? What could be more classic? I love the lace patterns. They look slightly victorian, but with a contemporary edge....however you proceed with these, I'm always eager for the results. You must have more room in your brain than I have in mine :)

  14. Lovely lace patterns.
Going back to your cut out leaves, I know what they remind me of, well slightly, I think its' called 'Sea Lavender'. The leaves are not fall colours but, grey/green with milky veins that look like they've been etched or painted. Probably nothing like your leaves really LOL!

    Have a great week,

    Sandie xx

  17. I find it quite refreshing to go to paper for a change. The lace drawings look as if they have years of potential for stitch.

  18. Your lace drawing is beautiful. Do you have any xmas cards left from your open day?.I have been in denial about xmas as well but I'm going to have to do something about it and if I could buy some cards from you that would be a start.

  19. Hello Gina. I am glad that you're recovering.

These drawings are so beautifully done and certainly show good, playful creative strength. It's as if you are doing paper applique work. Wonder what would happen if the paper was a bit sheer? I think this technique has so many possibilities.

  20. You've switched off comments, so I'll cheat. Delete this as you wish.

I was thinking again of our choir mistress explaining to us, that the rests are important in the music, like the holes in lace, part of the pattern.

As lace without holes wouldn't be lace, if your blog is all sweetness and light - it isn't life as we know it, is it?

I hope, and I'm sure you will find a way forward.

  21. So sorry you are feeling wretched at the moment and hope it will soon pass. Hope you don't give up on your degree - you've already done so much work towards it. Cutting back on teaching might help to give you breathing space. Take care of yourself and get well soon.

  23. Am leaving a comment here Gina because I just wanted to say cathartic moans are sometimes just what the doctor ordered and I hope your post above helps you order your thoughts. Hope you feel better too - it's hard to feel positive when you're at a low ebb physically. Besides we're always here to listen and if you can't have a bit of a moan to friends then they're not really friends and we'll be happy to see you back whether or not there's a smile on your face x
