Duplicity

I know, I said there wouldn't be so much cake... but things haven't quite turned out as planned. Sam was meant to move into his new house on Sunday but he's still here.

The girl from whom he was sub-letting the room, Alex, failed to tell her female house mates that Sam was in fact Samuel not Samantha. Alex also failed to tell Sam that one of her housemates was prohibited from living in a mixed gender house due to religious reasons. As far as we can tell she planned for Sam to move in on Sunday and hoped that somehow everything would be alright. It was probably fortunate that the landlord found out what was happening and emailed Sam on Friday... just two days before the planned move... to tell him he would not be able to take the room.

Understandably Sam was very disappointed and angry.

And then today we had another disappointment. In October I bought Jacob tickets to see Eric Clapton. Stewart and I were planning to go with him. Not a cheap night out but as it was for his eighteenth birthday it seemed worth it... and worth the seven month wait. The concert is on Friday but the tickets hadn't arrived as of yesterday morning. I checked the confirmation email - the one that says "Please print for your records" which said please email if your tickets have not arrived five days prior to the event. I did that... but it bounced back... further investigation seems to suggest that I purchased the tickets from a bogus site. A site that looked identical to the official Eric Clapton site.

I know in the grand scheme of things none of this is that bad. After all, Sam is not homeless and Jacob will get over the disappointment - in fact he took the news really well and was more concerned that I'd lost the money (I think I can claim it back on my credit card for goods not delivered). I'll even get over the fact that I feel a bit of a muppet being so gullible and taken in so easily. But what really gets to me is the realisation that there such unscrupulous and duplicitous people in the world. I may be a bit of a mug but I like to see the best in everyone... I like people... I trust them. Of course I know there are bad people out there but when it comes so close to home it shakes my world. Sorry to moan but I feel pretty crappy today!

  2. That was a crappy day. Poor Sam, poor Jacob, and poor you. It's just not fair. And no, in the scheme of things no one has died, BUT it's still grotty. And so unnecessary - if only people would be honest and open.

However, it has to be said - that cake looks ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!

  8. We have to remember it is just some mindless horrible minority of people that do these horrible things and it is very easy to be tricked by them so don't blame yourself Gina. Have a big cyber hug and a piece of your gorgeous cake (if there's any left!). Hugs to your boys too if they're not too big xx

  14. I think you have every right to feel crappy Gina. It is so disheartening to realise just how unscrupulous some people are,but I really do believe the good outweighs the bad. Nurse your wounds and eat some of your gorgeous cake and congratulate yourself that your boys (men) are not of this ilk xx

  16. What a cake! My daughter purchased tickets for the V festival from a bogus site. Like you said, they look very realisistic, lets hope you get your money back.

  17. Oh Gina, I can completely understand why you'd be feeling a bit crappy. It is horrible to have your faith in human nature shaken like that. It sounds like you're doing your best to get over the experience by focusing on the positive (and making delicious cake) and I hope it doesn't colour your world grey for too long. I like what Pipany said - hang onto the fact that those you care most about and those you surround yourself with here are decent folk.

  18. Oh that's really crapdoodle. I'm sure you'll be able to claim the money back, but it's the disappointment after such a long wait. Cake looks utterly fabulous though - enjoy it!

  19. oh big huge cyber hug for you Gina. How ghastly! It puts you off wanting to buy anything online for fear of being conned. I hope Sam finds somewhere to live soon by the way!
Great to catch up on all your news. I've been away for a wek. Moira x

  20. You are most certainly not a muppet Gina! This happens a lot from what I hear which is why I only buy things like that with my credit card. I do not use it for anything else really. I remember what it was like with student accommdation and I hope that Sam finds something soon. Your free amchine embroiderers are so very neat.

  22. Good Gravy! I'm surprised you had the fortitude to bake, after such a let-down.

I wish I were as trusting as you, but I'm afraid my advanced years have taught me to change my tactics.

Someone once asked me if it was true, that I didn't like any of my daughter's boyfriends upon first meeting them. I said it was absolutely true. I always start out not liking them, and there's nowhere to go but up.

If they turn out to be buggars, then.......the heck with them, and I'm never disappointed, but I'm sometimes very delighted.

  23. Oh how awful Gina, for all of you. You weren't a muppet - it's very easy to fall foul of such things, especially on the internet (it's happened to me a couple of times). It was not your fault at all, but most certainly the fault of the duplicitous website. Here's hoping your money can be claimed and that today and yesterday look/looked a little brighter. Sending thoughts x
