Progress with Persephone

I finished off the second brooch that I started in the class with Jill Flower on Saturday. I think I prefer this one with the little glimpses of text.

It did take forever to stitch all those beads and sequins though.

So today I've been working on a different version. This time made from recycled plastic bags rather than paper.

And all the sequins stitched on by machine. It took a fraction of the time and I'm really pleased with the result.

Especially as it will part of the Bodice for Persephone, which is still ongoing - although progress is being made...

Slowly but surely!

  1. Who would have thought that those beautiful brooches had been made from paper and plastic! Gorgeous!

  2. You and your Sainsburys bags!

Seriously, I am always so impressed with what you can see to make from things the rest of us might throw away. I still have bits of chopped up and washed off tomato puree tube waiting to be sewn!

  3. They are both beautiful and bring recycling into a new dimension. Persephone will be delighted with hers! There is a feature on Jill Flower's work in the current issue of Workbox.

  6. I was just wondering if there will be a problem in about 6 months time with the plastic bag? We use plastic bags for the practical purposes of keeping things dry and so use them frequently but we are finding that most of them are now the biodegradable type and just do not last and I was wondering how that affects peoples craft work, is it feasible any longer to include plastic bags in recycled projects?

  7. Oh well done - and I especially like the time saving tip! I must try sweetie wrappers next. It's not like I haven't got a multitude of sweetie wrappers at my disposal.

  11. Gina your work is stunning, these brooches are so intricate and beautiful and looking back at the Persephone post, I really look forward to seeing how that progresses too. I've also just read your posts about Joe in NZ, what you must have gone through before you heard he was ok I can only imagine and I'm so pleased it's a happy story for your family. What an experience for him though, I'm sure that once you have all recovered from the shock it will be the making of him!

  12. Oh Gina, they're stunning! The plastic bag one is so perfect on the Persephone bodice. I still can't get over the fact that it's recycled plastic bags! I'm so glad to read that Joe is safe and sound - you must have had an incredibly frightening time for those few hours before you heard from him, I can totally understand the depth of your relief.

  15. Garden centres will soon being selling the snowdrops really cheap, once the flowers have gone over. Buy some to plant, they will be great next year. They look good amongst black grass. I am going to move mine soon and mix them with a pot of black grass I have on the patio.
