Stitching without Bread Pudding

Lest you think there has been nothing other than the baking of cakes around these parts I thought I would show you that as well as sitting on my backside in front of a sewing machine feeding myself with bread pudding I have actually done some sewing this week. First of all there were these two little book jackets made as samples for my class at The Settlement.

We are still working on some of the lovely patterns from Jenny Rolfe's book but instead of using the resulting fabric to make bags, this time it was turned into book jackets. We've only been working on this project for a couple of classes but already Margaret has finished her book pictured below.

Ann also finished hers and was delighted to have completed a project in class instead of having to do "homework".

And Jan, who is always speedy, managed to finish two book jackets, both pictured below.

As well as making book jackets for class I've also had a commission to cover a photograph album for my friend's new grandson and I finished that last night... without the benefit of bread pudding... didn't think I should risk greasy fingerprints on the silk!

Just a simple applique design of boats...

front and back!

Tomorrow I'm off to talk to the ladies of Horsham Embroiderer's Guild and on Saturday I'm teaching more book making but I'm sure I'll be back before too long... no doubt with more cake!

  1. lovely book covers Gina. do like the way your graduate through the colour spectrum. I use Delia's bread pudding recipe but I probably triple the mixed spice as I love it! lol Enjoy Horsham.

  3. OOOh I love making books and book covers. I love the commission cover, reminds of the mural we painted in my Godsons bedroom wall when he was about 3. He has just turned 15!

  4. Perhaps I should make and eat bread pudding, then my work might be as good as yours! The book jackets are all beautiful and I love the little fabric tabs at the end of the cords - a nice finishing touch.
    The commissioned piece is delightful.

  8. Gina, how I wish that I had a warm dish of your bread pudding in front of me, but think that the photos and recipe might, might get me to make some of my own. It really does look so appealing on this chilly evening.

Now...on to embroidery. I love those book covers. The embroidered lines connecting those circles somehow remind me of maps, old and new, with the circles being the various sites along various routes. Come to think of it, those circles were destinations for the embroidery stitching to reach.

    The results are quite lovely.

As always, best wishes to you. xo

  11. What beautiful book covers, Gina - especially those gorgeous little boats!

I think bread cake of all sorts is mandatory at this time of year. My home currently smells of freshly baked flapjacks - for them, cos I'm trying to make do with the contents of the fruit bowl. Autumn is no time to be on a diet!

  12. I love the books and those stitch patterns - I'm going to have to find Jenny's book now. And that idea for a book jacket on a photo album has just sorted my Christmas present conundrum - thank you! Have fun in Horsham tomorrow x

  14. Gina, that little sailor book cover is perfection! How on earth do you get your stitched lettering so even? That will be a treasured heirloom for sure so it's good that there are no fingerprints on it! Sounds like you are very busy at the moment - good that you are finding a little baking time inbetween x
