Bella Pasta

We eat a lot of pasta in our house. Mostly because it is so quick and easy. In the time you can boil up a pan of water you can whip up a quick sauce and hey presto, a healthy nutritous meal in half an hour. So when Ben bought me a pasta machine for my birthday my first thoughts were more along the lines of "I wonder if I can use that for printing" rather than "Oh good, now I can make my own pasta."

But it seemed only polite to give a try for its intended purpose. The dough was surprisingly easy to make... just flour and eggs.

Rolling it out was actually fun... (maybe I should get out more)

And I got quite excited when it cut me strips of tagliatelle!

Admittedly this whole process took about an hour so not something to be done when you need a meal in a hurry... but the resulting pasta was superb. Much lighter than any shop bought stuff with a lovely flavour of eggs (from our own hens)

Tagliatelle with a spicy aubergine, tomato and olive sauce.

We had pasta again this evening... but after a day of Open Studios I opted for the quick version!

  1. looks like your pasta turned out really well Gina. I don't think I would be patient enough. the only time I ever thought about buying a pasta machine was to run fimo clay through it..... :)

  2. Looks yummy your pasta. I have a paster machine as well, & sometimes I make the pasta with spinach in it. I just blend the spinach in the food processer Then add it into the pasta mix with the egg. Yummy.

  3. I saw no pasta in evidence at Open Studios, or even clues that it was in the offing, but it was nice to see Gina's latest textural landscapes, including the really haunting piece Flora.

All the best for the last day of Open Studios!

  4. We are a pasta family too, we love the stuff, it's an especially good meal option when you're veggie!
Making the pasta looks like a lot of fun and as with everything homemade always tastes better.

  5. Gina, pasta is a regular visitor to my dinner table, but I have never actually made my own noodles. I remember, ages ago, having the privilege of watching a boyfriend's aged grandmother make her lighter than air pasta. She did not use any stainless steel machinery, but rather used a wooden board and a rolling pin that looked very much like a broom handle.

She was a wonderful cook! xo

  6. Your pasta looks delicious, I bet it tasted so different to the dried version. But as you say , only to be attempted when you really want to cook.

  8. I must admit to thinking about printing with it first too! I like pasta but sadly my husband doesn't so I rarely buy it and have never made it. Lovely to make it with your own hens' eggs. Our son is a keen cook and we gave him a pasta machine some years ago - I'm sure it is still in regular use.

  10. Mmmm, it looks delicious.

Luke calls spaghetti/tagliatelle the 'never ending meal' - it seems to him that no matter how much he has eaten there's still so much more to go! I bet he wouldn't moan if it was your lovely fresh pasta :)

  11. Gina, in my world, life's too short to make pasta.... go on, use it for printing!

  12. Making pasta is one of my favourite things to do in the kitchen - we don't do it very frequently but homemade ravioli are easy, and tortellini are gorgeous if rather labour intensive! In fact, we're going to have to add that to our list of holiday activities.

  15. I have so far resisted buying one of those. I think I can sustain the resistance.

  16. Your card was much appreciated, Gina, and a most unexpected surprise - small in physical size, but made from lovely real paper (with an envelope to match), and big on both message and the petalled flower / sun that adorns it.

    Thank you so much!
