Lippy

At the show on Monday, a lovely lady was admiring some of my brightly coloured embroidered fabric samples and asked if I could make her a lipstick case from such a fabric - a small bag to hold a mirror and two or three lipsticks. No problem sez I... and went on to quote a ridiculously low price...

I ploughed straight in... no pattern, no thought and several hours later I came up with this. Okay... pretty enough I suppose (despite a wobbly edge) but about half the size she had specified and rather lumpy in places! Oh bother I thought...

So yesterday, while my class were busy with their rusty fabric and gold embroidery I started on version two. This time I thought about it and made a pattern... and it worked (yes, I know... there is a lesson to be learned there)

Plenty big enough for up to three lipsticks and a mirror... and not a wobbly edge in sight.

As you can see... they are completely different sizes!

And as for the little version... well it's big enough to hold my one and only lipstick... and it's only me that needs to know about that wobbly bit... well... me and all of you, of course. Just a pity that I don't often wear lipstick and when I do the last thing I think about is reapplying it when I'm out!

After several hours work and using up some lovely silk fabric, the other lesson learned is that I'm never going to make money at this lark but then that's not what it's all about. I've had the pleasure of making it and the recipient was delighted... but I'm still not going into mass production!

  1. When you're as lovely as we both obviously are who needs lipstick I say. I love the case

  2. I could almost be persuaded into carrying lipstick with a case like that.

Oh, who am I trying to kid. I came out of the shower with panda eyes from yesterday's unremoved mascara (whoops) and no one bothered to tell me, and it was a full half hour before I looked in a mirror and noticed. That should tell you all you need to know!

  3. Love both cases, the fabric is gorgeous! Would credit cards fit in the smaller one? Something must! It's too pretty not to be used! :) x

  4. Lucky lady to have a unique designer lippy case at a reasonable price! It's so pretty and just looking at it would brighten a dull day.

  5. Love to see work in progress and that we all make mistakes :-) I keep trying to get in the habit of wearing lipstick or gloss but give up - I spend far too much time kissing little sweetpea, talking and drinking coffee and really can't be bothered to re-apply 50million times a day :-) How about using it as a key case or for coins?

  6. Beautiful, joyful colours and embroidery. I put lipstick on in the morning (sometimes) and then it is left at home. I am sure the lady who is going to receive the case is going to love it!

  9. Just a thimbleful...

I am surprised the lady concerned hasn't asked for a matching bigger bag for the little bag to go in - they are so delicious!

  10. I love the pretty colors Gina! I think it's terribly difficult to make money with handmades -- the cost to time ratio is out of whack!

  15. I love them both. The fabric is especially beautiful, would a tutorial be too much of an ask? Maybe one on just how you made the fabric look so delicious!

  18. I love the lippy case and you now have something else to clutter up the handbag too! I can never remember to reapply lipstick but the case is worth having as it is soo pretty. Could be made bigger into a nice bag that everyone can see.

  23. Gina this is just beautiful and how very accommodating of you to make a custom order and I'm sure you're right. You might not make your millions this way (although who knows?!) but the pleasure is all yours in the process!

  24. They are both very beautiful lipstick holders. I don't know what it says about me, but I've never owned a lipstick holder. But if I was the sort of person who did, I would like one just like that. Lovely work. x
