Canvas Work

At the last Young Embroiderer's meeting I noticed we had several rolls of tapestry canvas in our resource cupboard and decided at our next meeting we could try some canvas work. All very well in theory but my only experience of canvas work is a cushion made from a kit about thirty years ago. So I rummaged through old copies of "Stitch" magazine and adapted an idea for a bookmark (although made it into charm for my scissors). It looked simple enough! And stitching the actual design wasn't too difficult. But stitching the two pieces of canvas together, trying to keep them aligned and the stitching neat, never mind going round the corners, was near impossible.

I almost gave up, but not one to admit defeat I had another go using a slightly thicker thread. This time it was a little neater but it wasn't any easier... my fingers are very sore!

Although it does make a very smart bookmark.

I could start again and come up with another idea but we are meeting tomorrow morning. No doubt the children will find it a doddle!

  1. Looks good to me, but I know what you mean about finishing canvas. I think that you are involved in young embroiderers is so cool. I can't wait to take Will and Anna along.

  2. Looks lovely! It did remind me that I have a green one of these that I made from a National Trust kit that I got for Christmas one year. I wonder where it is? The youngsters will love it.

  3. It looks really lovely to me - is it plastic canvas, or some sort of fabric? I think I made a cushion cover too - many years ago. I'm sure I didn't throw it away as it was an expensive kit. I wonder where it is? I didn't see it when we moved!

  5. Gina....I know I keep saying it but you are a wonder to me. I really don't know how you fit everything in. Great idea for the Y E. Great idea too to put a dangly thing on your scissors, I can never find mine when I need them, buried under all my stuff!
Hope all goes well with the YE.

  7. That's a very pretty bookmark. It would last 5 minutes in this house before a Small pinched it though (and lost it)!

  8. Thats the trouble with canvas work. We made a square each for a cushion at one of our guild Parties and the poor person who had to stitch it all together had a terrible time!
Your little squares look good though.

  9. Well, it looks lovely and I'm sure your young embroiderers will love making one of their own.

I hope your fingers recover very soon - that tapestry canvas is very unforgiving!

  10. the kids will love this, it must be really exciting watching youngsters enjoy stitch, I am starved of company at home regarding those who embroider, surrounded by men you see.

  11. The book mark idea is lovely.
There is always so much preparation before you even get to the class.
Your examples will be great for the children.
