Since last time...

I have visited an exhibition... for the second time.
I loved it but then I have a long standing fascination with the life of Frida Kahlo.
There were photographs and films, clothes, objects and paintings and I came home inspired to paint and work in my sketchbooks every day.
Have I done it? Have I heck! I also came home inspired to make an effort to dress up more, but that's not happened either!

I took the train to the exhibition but I have also driven to London in the past week and loaded up my car with all the stuff I drove there just three months ago. After three months of London life youngest son has decided he would be better off living in Cambridge... which is what the rest of us thought three months ago. Are you impressed that the words "I told you so" were not uttered once, not even as we sat in traffic for an hour queuing to get through the Blackwall tunnel.

He's going to live on a boat moored on the River Cam. I'm not sure how I feel about that but I have the pleasure of helping him clean it this weekend. He tells me it is full of spiders. I definitely know what I feel about that!

I've taught a book making class which was good fun and as a result I'm trying to put together a downloadable tutorial with step by step photographs. It is taking forever!

I'll let you know when it is finished... I might need someone to test it for me before I put it in my shop. Give me a shout if you are interested.

I have been dress making. I bought a pattern and fabric when I was at the Festival of Quilts two weeks ago. It seemed like a good idea to make myself a dress for wedding number three... which just happens to be a week today. Do not judge me, do not say a word... it seemed like a good idea. I've put the zip in today.

I made cakes... fifty of them. Well there were actually sixty eight and we kept some for ourselves. But I delivered fifty of them for a party organised by Clic Sargent via a Free Cakes for Kids referral.

I've been to a book club meeting where we discussed our latest book The Whole Day Through by Patrick Gale. There were mixed reactions at book club ranging from a good read to okay but I enjoyed it. Which was just as well really as I had recommended it. After reading voraciously all summer I seem to have ground to a halt and I'm struggling to find something that captures my interest. Suggestions are most welcome.

In this interview with Patrick Gale he says it is cake bakers who wield the power using cake and sugar as bribes. I'm not sure how I feel about that, although I did take some of the spare cakes into my class this week... I wasn't really trying to make them write nice things about me on the end of class feedback forms... honestly!

I will be baking more cake this coming week as I am making the wedding cake...  three tiers of sponge in three different flavours. And talking cake - The Bake Off is back next week. I'm quite excited as it is one of the few things I actually watch on TV.

So that was my week that was. I hope you have a good weekend. Spare me a thought battling the spiders. It will be a challenge given I can't stand to be in the same room as one.

  1. Gina, I would love to be a tester of your book-love paper projects equally to fabric. Your cakes are beautiful. Can’t believe you are making the wedding cake and a dress all by next Saturday. Look forward to seeing both.

    1. If you send me an email Catriona on textiles@ginaferrari.co.uk I'll send you the instructions when they are ready. I appreciate the help as it is always good to have an independent eye run over these sort of things.

  2. Ah Gina, you never cease to amaze me with your enthusiasm for all things beautiful. Love your little notebook - I'd never be able to write in one, too beautiful! I hope you have been trying your dress on as you were sewing? My last dressmaking ended in an unwearable disaster! I only noticed at my travel destination.... I used a pattern that made a beautiful well fitting dress before and I still don't know what went wrong but wrong it went. Wishing you a spider free weekend. xx

    1. How frustrating about your dress. I was very fool hardy about trying mine on and making a toile but I was also lucky. It is finished and it fits. I now need to decide what to wear with it!

  3. Was going to say I would like to be your tester but it looks as if you have one. Your cakes look so yummy.

  4. Your books are very pretty and as always the cakes are amazing.
I'm sure you're glad your boy is back closer to home, well done on not saying 'I told you so". Be kind to the much maligned little spiders!!

    2. I can't kill the spiders but I would prefer they weren't there! There might be too many for catching under a glass and releasing outside.

  5. I think you should insist that your son clears the boat of spiders before you get on board! Your baking looks wonderful as do those books. My binding is distinctly rustic by comparison. I am glad I am not the only one who gets inspired, makes great plans and then just toddles along as usual. Maybe one day?

  6. Oh Gina, as ever I’m in awe of your amazing energy. Well done on allowing your son to follow his dreams and being there to steer him along his journey. I’m sure it’s not easy. Love Patrick Gale and I haven’t read that one will have to order it from the van. Good luck with the dress. B x

    1. Thank you Barbara, the dress is finished and fits I just need to decide what to wear with it now! Not quite as good as previous Patrick Gale books but I still enjoyed it.

  7. I really enjoyed the Frida Kahlo exhibition too. I even bought the catalogue which is very rare for me. My propensity to play dress up is already a running joke, but I was very inspired by the colours and thought I should make more effort to jazz it up a bit. Also deeply touched by the ephemera of pain management and make up.

I may have mentioned it before: my favourite read this summer was The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. Much better than Latin lessons!

Looking forward to seeing the wedding frock.

  8. In truth I love any excuse to dress up but I fear it has become too easy to throw on jeans and and a shirt. I will add that to my list of books to look out for at the library.

  9. Well blooming done for not uttering "told you so". Proud of you Gina. We parents of adult children have to so often bite our lip and then perhaps help pick up the pieces or gently wince. It's all part of life's rich tapestry. So want to get to see the Frida exhibition... I must. Lovely diverse post and would so lovely to catch up with you before autumn winds blow in. Blogging still hasn't happened but just about managing Instagram. Well done lovely you x

    1. Do let me know if you plan a trip to London some time Liz, it will be lovely to catch up with you. Although our son and daughter in law have just moved down to the Bristol area so I may find myself in your neck of the woods before too long!

  10. Your notebooks look lovely, as do your cakes (and for such a brilliant charity). I've resisted joining a book club as I'm sure all I could contribute would be either 'I liked it' or 'I didn't like it'. With a vegan cake. I'm currently halfway through the 720 pages of A Little Life and enjoying it so far. Can also recommend The Night Visitor. Good luck to your boy in his new abode. And the spiders in theirs.

  11. A houseboat on the Cam sounds very romantic, though given the spiders - maybe not!

    1. The idea is very romantic and I'm sure that is the appeal but it is going to need a lot of tlc before I would consider it habitable!

  12. You are the most amazing woman I ‘know’!
Re spiders; spread lots of conkers around the boat. It really does work, we currently have spiders for the first time since last autumn, they are worn out I suppose. You can get a ‘conker essence’ spray (can’t remember the name) but I haven’t used it.
We know a couple who lived very happily on a boat in Cambridge, it seems like a very nice community. He will be fine.

    1. I left him to deal with his own spiders in the end although I don't think boat living is really going to work out for him. Had to try it I suppose!

  13. P.S. if you want a tutorial tester I’m your man (or woman actually). But won’t be home with all my ‘bits’ until end of Sept.

  14. I am so impressed by your energy and talent Gina, you are just so creative! Well done on resisting the ‘I told you so’, and good luck with the spiders! Cakes look amazing as ever. I love your little noteboom, so clever. I recently attended a class on coptic bookbinding and absolutely loved it, but have more or less forgotten everything I learned, though I do have two very pretty A5 journals now! X

    1. I'm having to resist "I told you so" again... less than a week on the boat and he's not sure it is the right decision. And I wonder why I'm so tired!
