My Quiet Weekend

Okay, I know the weekend seems a whole life time away and no doubt you are all looking forward to the next one but in my head this was scheduled for Monday... it just never happened. Is it me or does the pace of life just seem to get crazier and crazier? I am in desperate need of a holiday! The weekend just past however was at a slower place than usual. No, of course I didn't just sit and relax but I did things at my own pace and for us. It would have been good to fit in some painting or other art work but another time maybe.

  • I made a quiche for lunch - I've made one every week for the past year or so for our farm shop and as a result never seem to make one for us anymore. Last week thay had a mushroom and pesto tart with pine nuts that I really fancied keeping for us, so I made another one. With some crunchy homemade coleslaw it it di the job both Saturday and Sunday!
  • I bought some ridiculously expensive fabric. I have never spent this much on fabric before but I couldn't resist this beautiful boiled wool and it is destined to be a coat. The pattern is relatively simple but I'm still terrified to cut into it! I need a day when I'm not preoccupied with other things... so watch this space.
  • I made bread.... mostly because we had run out and it seemed preferable to a trip to the shops.
  • I filled my new biscuit barrel with cookies. Of course it is now almost empty again and I am reconsidering the skimpy outfit. Something with a bit of room for movement seems more appropriate.
  • We spent some time with this gorgeous little chap who is now very mobile. He is climbing, crawling and pulling himself up to standing... and becoming very vocal! He is absolutely adorable. Where did those ten months go.
  • I finished off some off these poppies for my friend Liz (They will be with you by the end of the week I hope... once I've got the ends sewn in!) We met very briefly in a group when we both attended the Build a Business day last year. Sometimes you just connect with someone and that was the case with us. If like me, you like food and fabrics with a bit of Italy thrown in then I'm sure you'll enjoy reading Liz's blog and you can read about her Remember Me project here.
There were also dog walks and lines learned with a fair bit of mooching about so a good weekend. Since then of course there has been teaching, rehearsals and a birthday with cake... no rest for the wicked but I guess it is better than being bored! Off to ice another cake now but will be back soon I hope!

  1. It sounds like a relaxing weekend - on the whole. Glad you enjoyed it. The coat - I suggest to make a muslin with a cheap heavy weight calico. That way, you'll be confident not to waste your fabric. On the other hand, the pattern looks quite forgiving (not fitted, not closures)... tempting! Have fun with it and remember to use your walking foot :-)
Your grandson is adorable. It is a fun stage of toddlerdom I think. x

  2. An adorable little man. Butter wouldn't melt I think! It sounds like a lovely weekend, albeit with no art time. The coat fabric is gorgeous, I shall look forward to seeing how it goes. The quiche sounds delicious, I haven't made one in ages but you've reminded me how good they are. CJ xx

  3. Sounds a good weekend to me. It's quieter here as grandaughter is now at school full-time (where did those 5 years go?). This week I'm juggling making a mermaid costume for gd's birthday, and I've somehow been landed with making a birthday cake for the Cathedral organ and however many people appear at the 9th Anniversary recital. Thanks, husband. I could do with your cake making expertise, Gina. By experimentation I've discovered that an 8 egg sponge fills our largest meat tin and I need two of those. By Sunday I shall be glad of a rest!
Coat fabric is lovely -at least boiled wool doesn't fray. Look forward to seeing finished article.

  8. Wow -- sounds like you had a busy but great weekend. They go by so quickly -- it's almost time for the next one! And it's not just you -- everything is so busy now -- I'm reassured though, that this is what keeps us young ... right???

  9. I had to make a cape for my future sister-in-law, and I had never spent that much on fabric either. I kept finding excuses not to get it cut out, but with the wedding day looming, I had to bite the bullet. I love the colour and look forward to seeing how it progresses.

  11. Wow Gina if that is your idea of a "cherish weekend"! LOVE the coat. I know what you mean about being in the right state of mind for cutting. I decided rashly it was a good idea to make a coat for my sons wedding even though I hadn't done any proper dressmaking since the 80's! This was on top of all the food, 120 cutlery pockets (yes really!) table runners, kids tent and calligraphy etc... I chose fabric that needed pattern matching and it took me a long time to get brandishing the scissors!.... Gina you can do it!!! Thank you for the sweet mention in your post and yes it's been lovely to get to know you through your blogs. Kindred spirits. I have finished researching the last resting place of my final soldier and what a really sad one to end on. He is buried in a Commonwealth Grave together with his brother. Though with different regiments they died on 24th and 25th December 2018 aged 22 and 23. I am still researching why their deaths occurred after the Armistice. It has been really sobering. So are you heading for a cherish weekend or a supercharged Gina one?!! Best wishes- you are amazing x

  12. I couldn't believe that was your little grandson, even though we've seen our own grandson shoot up too. Somebody slow down time just a little. Have fun making your coat, it will be beautiful.

  13. I Gina please keep your lovely blog going. I have very suddenly become poorly and all the waiting for umpteen appointments is so boring. So reading the blogs helps. I see your quiet weekends ! As mad really but I know they are quiet for you.. we have an identical little boy. Aren't they such fun Best wishes Vera.

  14. You certainly packed a lot into your quiet weekend. Love the new biscuit barrel (there's an EB rectangular tin here with an ill fitting lid as it's been dropped so many times). Love the colour of your coat fabric (I dare you to cut it!). Your littlest is getting to be quite the big boy. Lively at that age, aren't they?!

  15. All good things by the look of it. I’m going to have a look at those patterns, their title sounds good :). Fabric look gorgeous although I veer off purple because it was the colour of my school uniform. Hope you have a not too exhausting week. B x

  16. Your grandson is adorable! Always fun to see little ones develop.
I hear you on cutting into expensive fabric. I never had this fear when I was younger, but now hesitate. Don't think about the fabric, just think about the coat you are creating. Gorgeous blue shade!!
Your "quiet" weekend sounds quite busy, but very nice :) Our Thanksgiving is this coming weekend, but it will be quiet for our family. Happy October!!

  17. Wow Gina, did you find time to sit down at all? Glad you enjoyed all the activity anyway.
That coat will be beautiful, the colour is gorgeous. I think Christina's suggestion of a muslin could be helpful when you are nervous about cutting into such expensive fabric.
I made a wedding dress for my niece with very expensive silk and i was petrified about cutting the pattern out - but it worked and she looked lovely - I acquired a few more worry lines in the process though.
I can't believe all that time has passed and your grandson is now so active. This is a lovely time of life for grandchildren, still small enough to be cuddled, but old enough to be interesting. Cheers

  18. Thanks for the comment on my blog, it reminded me to check in on yours. Apple in their infinite wisdom have ditched the RSS feeds without notice and left me missing the blogs that others have written. If you find a way to get out of the crazy busyness and still have time to create, then let me know how you do it.

  20. I love the wool, it will make a fabulous coat. You stay so busy but as you say it is better then being bored. I tend to get in my own head too much if I'm not busy. xx

  22. I do think boiled wool makes the perfect coat for this time of year and I'd be interested to hear how your pattern works out. I also saw some lovely purple boiled wool recently at the Sewing Bee Live show. £30 a metre but I was still sorely tempted. If I hadn't made a Maker's Atelier coat pattern up recently I would definitely have indulged. I'm glad you did!

  23. PS My coat made up beautifully so have no fear. I did learn not to use a rotary cutter though (maybe mine was a little blunt). Shears were much more accurate and gave a cleaner edge.
