Speed Queen!

Overheard at home:
"So what else can I add to my 60 x 60 list?"
"Hot air balloon?"... "Done it", "Water skiing?"... "Done it", "Absailing?"... "Done it", "Bungee Jump?"... "Never doing it... ever"
"But I've never riden a motor bike before and I'd really like to do that!"

My brother!

In fact given that my Dad rode motorbikes when he and Mum met, and my brother has not only ridden bikes since he was sixteen but now races Rally bikes, I'm not sure how I've managed to get to sixty never having ridden one before. My brother offered to take me out for a spin but given he lives an hour away and we never seemed to be able coordinate a time when we were both free and the weather was fine, it looked like it was never going to happen... that was until a friend from just up the road offered to take me out.

Last Sunday the sun was shining so Mike gave me a call to see if I fanced going out... oh yes! We started out gently on the small roads around the villages until we ended up on the by-pass... and then we went really fast (I will not incriminate either Mike or myself by telling you how fast) and I absolutely loved it! It was brilliant! So much so that I think I would really like to learn to ride my own bike, although financially it's not really an option right now. I'll never say never though (except for bungee jumping, of course).

Me and my grandad circa 1958

And then when I was looking through some old photos I found I had actually been on a motor bike before, although I don't think it moved very far!

  1. I can see your big grin under the helmet. Glad you enjoyed it. I have been on a motorway a few times - hated it! The speed was terrifying and I felt really exposed. xx

  2. I have had my motor cycle licence for forty years! I stopped riding when I moved to my apartment but I still miss it so much. I always felt safer on my bike than in my car. Glad you enjoyed the ride.

  4. Good for you - I have never wanted to ride a motorbike though. Our boys used to go mustering on my sister's property riding motor bikes when they were about 12 and 14. The younger son (now 46) still owns a Harley which he loves riding most weekends. I am glad I don't live nearby so I only know about it afterward!!

  5. How exciting! I went on one once when I was about 15 and was terrified, I quite fancy it now though. I'm with you on the bungee jump.

  7. Mine is almost the same story as yours - Dad always had motorbikes - then he had me and had to get a sidecar. I'm not sure he's ever really forgiven me. I always fancied riding on a bike, and my friends husband took me out while I was staying with them in Yorkshire Don't tell anyone but we did 100mph, which was very naughty considering our jobs. I got the bug and went and had a couple of lessons, but really didn't get on with it. you should though, I thinker you are bolder than me xx

  8. I love motorbikes but don't hanker after going on one. We had a motorbike when I was first married in my 20's and I have a strong memory of the road surface being closer than I'd have liked it as we rounded bends and so on. I looked rather like the Michelin man in all my get up. We regularly made the 135 mile journey to see my Mum in Essex on it. Eventually I had my own 100cc Yamaha which I dropped at least twice in the road. There's something about the sight and sound of a motorbike that gets the blood flowing but I prefer to look and admire than to ride. My Dad used to be a despatch rider in the war and used a bike for that and my uncles had bikes too so I was around them as a child. Glad you enjoyed the ride. x

  9. I'm with you on the bungee jump. You are obviously more intrepid than I am but I might not say no to a carefully chosen pillion ride once more, even now.

  12. I'm not sure that your Grandad looked like a ton-up rider but you look a natural on the back of that bike and I can see you burning rubber if you ever had a bike of your own!
