Little Knits

We've got some exciting news as Stewart's daughter and partner are expecting their first baby in December... I'm going to be Step-Grandma! Which of course means a good excuse to be knitting all sorts of tiny things in the coming few months.

We know it's going to be a boy and as Adrian is a big Spurs fan I thought I'd make the baby a little Spurs supporters outfit. I was convinced there would be loads of patterns available but so far haven't found anything suitable so will probably come up with my own design. However whilst searching for all things sports related I did find these little baby sneakers and couldn't resist.

They knitted up in no time at all and I'm now thinking that the well dressed baby probably needs these in several colours! These were knitted in Debbie Bliss's Baby Cashmerino and Rowan Tweed.

I had also intended to knit one of Julie's little cotton rabbits as I've made these several times before and love the way they turn out. I got as far as making the head and then I got to thinking it might be fun to make a little black cat instead as Kirsty and Adrian have a much loved black cat.

I'm not convinced I like him as much as the knitted rabbits I've made previously and it took me a couple of attempts to get the head right... One head ended up in the bin and I'm not sure I like this one much either. I played around with Julie's pattern a bit and made the ears a bit bigger which I preferred... And I know the jumper is too big but I doubt the baby will mind all that much. This was all in Baby Cashmerino, mostly because it is so lovely to knit with (and why the jumper is too big!) I expect there will be a rabbit too!

I'd forgotten what a nightmare it is trying to knit with black yarn though... so hard to see what I was doing and impossible to sew up in artifical light. And not easy to photograph either... a bit like black puppies!

This naughty boy has discovered my sewing room... probably as it is the only downstairs room with carpet so it's comfortable plus he does like to follow me about wherever I am. Of course now I have to be extra vigilent about what ends up on the floor...

I just retrieved a needlecase from his mouth before it did any damage!
Everything goes in his mouth... It's worse than having a baby!

  1. Gina, thanks for sharing the excellent baby news with us, and the photographs of what you've knitted so far. Isn't that Cashmerino yarn a pleasure to use! I love the sneakers and know you'll be finding ways to complete the Spurs look.

Yes, knitting with black yarn is tricky. Every time I use it, I am reminded that having good, natural sunlight available is a key ingredient.

Oh, just look at Hector. He is beginning to look more grown up. However, since he's still really in his puppydom, it's good you re-captured that needle case. Close call.

  2. Exiting! I love love love the little sneakers! The cat is really cute, too. If you fancy a really fun soft toy, I made some monkeys for the boys, which were a joy to knit (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/monkey-jacobus). Dogs are just so silly, eating anything that comes near their mouths. Glad you recovered the needle case. x

  3. Congratulations Gina! How exciting to have a little baby in your future. I see you're not wasting anytime in cranking out the dutiful knitted items ;) L.O.V.E. those sneakers!! How cute, and they'll look even better on chubby little feet! I think the cat looks great (although I am more fond of rabbits over cats). Silly puppy to try eating a needle case. Ouch! My dog's destructive chewing phase didn't last too long, so hopefully this will pass by quickly.

  4. How exciting. that baby is going to have so many knitted clothes and toys at the rate you work. the sneakers are really fabulous and I think the cat looks cute.
Lucky escape for Hector - I remember many years ago a dog at the house where I was renting a room managed to swallow a needle and thread. She ended up at the Vet for surgery to remove the needle - expensive exercise, but all turned out well. At least Hector had the whole needle case which you could easily see!

  5. Congratulations on your wonderful news! I became a step-Nanna this year too and it is the most exciting thing in the world. You are going to be very busy. I love your little cat it has plenty of character and is bound tone a favourite.
I love Hector's hangdog expression. Hopefully he'll behave himself in your sewing room, otherwise there'll be a baby gate at the door.

  7. Congratulations to granny and grandad, and to mum and dad too, of course. The tiny sneakers are perfect and he'll love puss as well. Many years ago my son wanted a black polo necked sweater for his Action Man. I knitted one with darning wool on cocktail
sticks, and that was bad enough. Hector looks a bit unimpressed with all the knitting that has been going on!

  18. Lovely news! Congratulations to you all. Love the little boots and the kitty. I'm sure they'll be very well received. Boo didn't have much of a chewing habit but the dog before him ate everything. I remember one day he coughed up a rolled up pair of woollen gloves. And they weren't even ours!
