From my kitchen over the past couple of weeks there have been....
1. Chocolate coffee fudge cake bites
From the Comic Relief Bake Off book. A bit like brownies but not quite as good according to my team of tasters. Not that they lasted very long!
2. Florentines
Taken as a gift to a friend. Recipe was from Nigella Lawson's Demestic Goddess book.
3. Mixed seed loaf
Just to show it is not all cake in this house a mixed seed loaf, that has become the only bread I bake lately. It has a tablespoon of honey in it which gives a subtle sweetness. But having watched the BBC programme last night about sugar, which seems to be the latest evil in our diets, I'm thinking I ought to start monitoring our sugar consumption!
4. Cabbage and Rice salad
A rather fabulous winter salad made with cabbage, walnuts, dried cranberries and red camargue rice with a nutty tahini dressing. See... I can do healthy! The recipe was in April's Good Food magazine.
5. Flapjacks
And because I was feeling so virtuous after all that salad... Flapjacks. I'm constantly on the quest for a perfect flapjack and will tweak and play around with recipes ad infinitum. These were pretty good but you've got to keep trying haven't you? But all that sugar again...
Linking up with Amy for Five on Friday.
I would love to see a definitive study that compares the diets and its effects of people who bake and cook from scratch on a very regular basis to those who obtain their sugar content from processed food. I really feel that these studies are not comparing like with like. Makes me cross! :)
ReplyDeleteAnyway now I have another grumble - I'm hungry after seeing all those pictures of cakes and things. Then again! I wouldn't have it any other way, they look delicious
Mmmmmm I think I drooled the whole time I was scrolling down! They all look delicious :) Flapjack is one of my all time favourite sweet treats :)
ReplyDeleteOhhh, everything sounds so delicious!!!! I love flapjacks, and brownies, or whatever these are called! I am not surprised that everything was eaten quickly!! Thank you so much for joining in. I hope that you have a great weekend! xx
ReplyDeleteIt all looks impressive, my mouth is watering I am off to see what I can find to eat in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteI deliberately missed that programme because I am a baker too and already worry about every other ingredient ha! Interesting that there were not as good as Brownies but still didn't last very long- that happens here too. My latest quest is to prefect muffins! I am alway tweeting to improve too X
ReplyDelete*perfect and *tweeking - sorry auto correct x
ReplyDeleteAll your five tasty delights look wonderful. I like the look of the bread and the salad. We too are watching our sugar intake (as well as trying to avoid Palm Oil and Barley) it becomes difficult at times:)
ReplyDeleteyour flapjack, my crunchie. Years ago I made them with a little spice and finely chopped apricots. Been ovenless while we are in the throes of alterations ... but by next weekend ... I can work thru the recipes I've been bookmarking for later. I shall return to yours!!
ReplyDeleteI think I quite fancy moving in with your family, all that yummy food! Everything in moderation is my mantra, even sugar. But I do get sugar cravings which are really difficult to control... Have a lovely weekend. x
ReplyDeleteYou know what? I love the look of that salad! I watched that prog about sugar too...it mostly seemed to be about processed/manufactured food. At least by making your own cakes there is some effort involved, so it's not exactly instant gratification And you have a large family on hand to share it all with - I say carry on!
ReplyDeleteGina, thank you for tempering that chocolate temptation with the 'healthy" salad. That mixture does look interesting...I may have to do a version.
ReplyDeleteAnd...Easter is almost here, so I can renew my acquaintance with chocolate very soon.
Happy Spring...and weekend, too. xo
a fabulous five indeed!
ReplyDeleteAll of that cooking and baking you have been doing looks so good!
ReplyDeleteMmm delicious. All of it!
ReplyDeleteYes I did watch that programme about sugar last night........scary stuff!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat salad does look delicious. :)

Oh, Yum! Everything looks so delicious! Your kitchen must smell heavenly! -Karen
ReplyDeleteNaughty but so nice. The cabbage salad sounds good and virtuous and you have reminded me that I need to make more flapjacks. I use the recipe in the little River Cottage Cake book but use half the golden syrup, a bit less sugar and add some chopped walnuts.
ReplyDeleteMy relatively perfect flapjack is all about the sugar. Got to use Billingtons dark muscovado. It's one of the only things in my shopping basket were I swear by a particular brand.
ReplyDeleteA very delicious Friday Five. Everything looks so good.
ReplyDeleteYum Yum. I think we're all surrounded by the latest evils -- it's always something. If I have to choose between sugar and 5 less years -- I'm choosing SUGAR!!!
ReplyDeleteThat salad looks delicious. It's choclate that is my downfall, rather than cake, I guess I better switch to the 85% cocoa type, not much sugar in that!
