Mixed Emotions

More faces from my needle today...

free machined sketches made with a single stitched line, without breaking off and starting again...

But it's not working for me yet...

and as I often find when translating things into stitch, it lacks the sponteneity of the original 5 minute sketch from my notebook...

So I'm not "happy"... let's see how I get on when I try to stitch "grumpy"

  3. They look great to me too. True they are 'stitch sketching', and have a different look from pencil (or pen) sketching. But to me they have an expressiveness and spontaneity all their own.

  4. I saw 'happy' before I saw the word written out. To me the stitched version has more vitality, more vigour.

  5. I just hope you can get Grumpy to sit still long enough! Xx

  6. Gina, something that interests me about these embroidered portraits that you've been creating is that continuity of the stitched line. It reminds me of what my drawing teacher showed me about the wonders of "contour" drawing, done when you put your pencil on paper, your eye on the subject and try to connect your hand holding the pencil with the steady motion your eye makes around the contour of the subject.

It always seemed like a bit of magic to me. Or self hypnosis. After a bit of practice the results were mostly rather amazing...in a good way.

  7. I have never tried to draw a face free motion, so I am really impressed with yours. It is sometimes hard to be objective about our own work and frustrating to be told it is wonderful, but I am afraid I think it is - wonderful!

  11. Girl, you have really found a talent here! So many people would love to be able to do this with a paint brush or pencil and you are doing this with your SEWING MACHINE! Amazing!
