Healing

Thank you for all you kind thoughts and words of wisdom. I couldn't decide whether the title of this post should be "Healing" or "Friendship" as it is about both really. I would be lying if I said I wasn't feeling frustrated by my temporary immobility, frustrated that painkillers are affecting my concentration, frustrated that I can't just get up and do what I want. But equally I am aware that this is only temporary, it's nothing that terrible or life threatening and I need to accept that life will be slow for a few weeks as I give my body time to heal.

I'm partaking of some leisurely crochet. I tend to associate knitting and crochet with watching TV and I am determined not to go down the road of daytime telly. So I crochet for half hour or so and then stop but there has already been much progress. Two weeks ago I felt a little guilty that I had bought yarn for the Frida Kahlo blanket crochet along. Now I am pleased to have the challenge, although I've still got a week until the next bit of the pattern is released and I've already finished the first set.

I am catching up with some reading and getting ahead with the book club choices. Again I can only do it in short bursts as I find my mind wanders and I lack concentration but that is improving daily. And kind friends who have visited have left me books and magazines to keep me going over the next few weeks.

Then I pick up my crutches and do a tour of the house... well downstairs only as tackling the stairs involves some inelegant shuffling on my bum... an image you probably don't need. It feels good to move about and I can see the beautiful flowers that have arrived since my accident and I am reminded of all the kind friends that I have.

Other friends have popped by or phoned for a chat, there have been offers of help with various tasks and later this week and next week I'm being taken out for a coffee and change of scene. Another friend, a hypnotherapist has even sent me downloads to listen to that will  help my bones heal. So I might be frustrated but I know I'm also blessed to have good friends and family who are making it easier for me to heal.

And yesterday I even ventured into the kitchen to bake a cake... admittedly only a simple banana loaf made all in one bowl but that still involved much manoeuvering and contortions with my crutches and prolonged lying down afterwards.  But I did it.... because apparently healing uses up extra calories (thank you Cathy for that information) and I fancied some cake, which is just as well because the thing I am missing most are my daily walks.

  1. I didn't think it would be long before you baked a cake! I love the look of your crocheted blanket and am so glad you have plenty of kind friends on hand. My husband has ventured out today for the first time since his return from hospital. A bit of warmth and sunshine does us all good.

  3. Oh Gina, no surprise here to see that a cake has been baked. I'm sure that cake will be part of the healing process.

What beautiful flowers you've shown us, both crocheted and naturally grown. Interesting, too, to hear of your hypnotist friend's download suggestions. Why not try it all! Particularly the restful and pampering bits.

Hoping that you will like the Kate Atkinson book. I liked it very much, but some of my friends definitely preferred Life After Life.

  4. Daytime TV, what a thought! I haven't watched it since I was nursing my youngest. I have an Amazon Prime subscription which allows me to watch endless box sets whenever I like. I also love the BBCiplayer, and the (inferior) equivalent for channel 4. I watched an interesting program called the Food Chain, it was about eggs and raspberries yesterday, what happens to them in between farm and kitchen, and what happens to the second rate produce (as judged by the supermarkets for example), too. You might find this interesting I think. Just in case the telly does beckon you. I am not surprised that you have been in the kitchen, baking a cake. Cake is important for healing. I hope you will be able to reduce the painkillers that affect your concentration soon. I also hope you enjoy the new Kate Atkinson book. I liked it very much but preferred the accompanying book, Life after Life. I didn't want this to end. There wasn't any reason why it should end, one could add chapter after chapter... Enjoy the beautiful flowers and your cake. x

  5. Glad to hear that you are managing short bursts of me time. I always find it strange that when you have time on your hands your mind doesn't often connect. I still have all the Lord of the Rings DVD's to watch over a couple of days, just waiting for the time and energy lol. Hope you feel better soon, once you don't need strong painkillers any more x

  8. It is tiring and annoying, frustrating as well but cake baking, even if it did mean a lot of lying down afterwards is at least an achievement.

  10. So glad to hear you're feeling a bit better, and like everyone else, I wasn't a bit surprised to see cake. Now he's retired my husband has taken over the cake making and cooks every other night, thank goodness as I've discovered I now hate cooking 😄 I love the crochet.

  11. I've been away for 5 day and just catching up with the news!

Healing up is very tiring so get lots of rest and don't do too much too soon.

  13. I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. I hope you're not in too much pain with it. I too associate knitting and crochet with watching TV but what I do occasionally is to watch an arty video from Youtube or to have an interesting podcast to listen to. Maybe you'll have time to take your sketchbook out again? Get better soon!

  16. I'm so sorry to hear about your fall Gina! Horrible thing to happen! I refuse to watch daytime TV as well. There are other things more worthy in the daylight hours. You have some good friends around you, and everyone seems to be taking such good care of you. I hope the time flies by and you are soon properly mobile again.

  17. My heart goes out to you Gina. It's been four months since I had both bunions removed and my toes broken in three places. You begin to realise just how much we depend on our feet and I believe there is no other pain that can match this. You are right not to go down the day time tv route, it is the pit of despair. I renew my love of crochet along with my love of lists for things I was going to do when I was walking again. You take care and listen to your body. xx
