Backstitch

I escaped!
I escaped the dust, the endless commercial pop radio, the builders rubble on our drive, the ever shifting deadlines for our finished kitchen and had a blissfull day out stitching with Gill at a fabric shop, Backstitch based in Burwash Manor near Cambridge. The first Wednesday in the month always used to be Spectrum day, but since my involvement with the group ended I have a years worth of SPECTRUM marked in my diary that I can now fill with other things... days out, exhibitions... and dress making!

I have had the pattern for a Tilly and the Buttons Coco Dress for months, I bought the fabric for the dress in September but it all lay untouched until today.

But by booking in to the shop for a social sew day, we had access to a wonderful big cutting table, plenty of room to spread out, tasteful music in the background and a whole day just to stitch and natter with no distractions... bliss!

Of course there were a few fabric purchases too... well, I need something to make the next time I go back for a day out stitching. And best of all I finished my first Coco dress. From start to finish in a day!

I posed for the first photo but then I had Gill and Heather (who works in the shop) telling me to cross my legs, thrust my hips and  lift my chin if I was posing for a photo... I resisted a Victoria Beckham pout though!

Back home at the ranch we have now passed day ten of the "week to ten days" we were quoted for our kitchen and it is nowhere near finished. (No surprise there) No sign of an oven either which is a little worrying given I have cakes to make next week. Ah well... at least the microwaved curry tasted good tonight!

  1. Oh how I sympathise. As I write I am babysitting for my daughter, so she and her husband can go and do more work on their overrunning renovation project. All the best and I hope it finishes soon for you

  2. Gina, that dress looks great on you! In each photo.

Spending a day in good company with lots of work space and pleasant surroundings sounds ideal. No wonder you were able to actually finish the dress in a day.

Sorry that your kitchen re-do is still undown, but better those builders get it all installed correctly, than to have them rush some shoddy stuff over the finish line. About the oven...I think that you should be able to bake a cake to test the renovation before the final renovation payment is made. If the cake turns out well, the builders get a slice.

  3. That's an adorable dress Gina -- it looks great on you. And it looks like that shop is a wonderful place for a day out too!

  5. Your dress looks fabulous Gina. I am unfortunately not a Tilly and the Buttons shape. Maybe one day. I shop at Backstitch online, love it. Shame we don't have a fabric shop like this here in Glasgow. Good luck with the kitchen refurbishment! x

  6. Love the dress Gina (and the pose), so good you got to escape to have a bit of fun. Lovely too that you have days earmarked to 'do fun things' just don't fill them with the mundane.
Hopefully the kitchen will be ready soon...I feel your pain!!!

  8. What perfect surroundings for a day of sewing, and a great result too. Hope the kitchen wont take much longer and that a kind friend or neighbour will lend hers for you to make that cake order.

  9. A perfect way to escape. Hang in there, the kitchen will be all the better for the wait. It's an awful process, I know, but it will soon be over. Just in time for a celebratory cake!

  10. Oh, I do like your Coco dress. I'm sure the new kitchen will be well worth all the mess once you're out the other side.

  11. What a wonderful place to go and have fun and a dress in a day. I don't envy the builders mess but how lovely it will be when they finish. We had a new kitchen a couple of years ago and it was well worth the upheaval.

  12. Great dress, I'd need bigger pockets though. Time with these things is usually the same as the price. Take initial estimate, double it and add a bit.

  13. Gina, the dress looks great. Wrong shape for me - or should that be I am the wrong shape for the dress? Whichever it is, I can so appreciate you bolting for the day. Tradies are working here too. I plucked up the nous to ask them to turn the music off as I hate it and I am sure the neighbours do too. After all, who is paying them? They obliged with no problems at all. So now I make them morning coffee! Win, win. What I find interesting is that you have the same issues with tradies as we in the southern hemishere. Wonder why it is they think they can treat people so poorly?

  14. Oh, how I wish I had access to a large cutting table!

Your dress looks good and all in one day is amazing, well done.

  15. Yes, why is it that all builders are superglued to a boom box of some description? Sorry about your chaos and I hope as I'm playing catch up here that your kitchen is finished.... and looks as good as that dress. If you can work that fast imagine what sort of kitchen fitter you might make?
