Fresh Air

This morning I went for a walk across the fields to the neighbouring village to buy a newspaper and some eggs (the last of our chickens died last week after just a few lonely weeks on her own)

And I realised that since our dog died in November I have not actually ventured out our back gate across the fields even once and it felt good to be doing something that used to be a daily part of my life.

I realised that I missed being out every morning and seeing the seasons change. I didn't even know that the cowslips were out.

I still get up early, but instead of donning wellies and grabbing the dog's lead, I pick up a kit bag and a swimsuit and head for the gym. I enjoy my swim and Pilates classes but it's not the same as getting that daily dose of fresh air.

I've not even ventured into the garden every day since we lost the chicken and look at all the flowers that have sprung up whilst I wasn't looking.

I think I even miss the cold, wet, muddy walks...

Although that is easy to say when the sun is shining!

I've resolved not to leave it five months before I venture across the fields again!

  1. Maybe a new dog when the time is right? I must admit I enjoy getting out everyday for a walk no matter what the weather.

  2. I have just started to create a new habit of walking everyday and signed up with the Hertfordshire Health Walks scheme. Did my first last Monday - about 50 people turned up for about an hours walk. x

  5. I'm really enjoying my early morning walks and miss it terribly when I haven't got the time to go. The plants and trees are blossoming and it all looks very pretty.
Sorry to hear about your chicken.

  6. Please send some of your nice weather up to Lancashire. It is so dark and gloomy today with spots of rain. I go out with the dog every day but the poor dog is turning rusty!! You must get another dog, it's not the same without them. Vera.

  8. Beautiful Spring photos Gina! It's amazing how quickly our routines can change. I'm finding I spend a lot more time outside now that I'm running but less time actually looking around me. I have noticed though, that I really become aware of the smells of the countryside when I'm running - in a good way! Whether I am naturally breathing more deeply as I run or whether it is just due to more time spent outside, I really appreciate the scent of the trees and flowers - and horses!! xx

  9. Thankyou for sharing all the lovely things you rediscovered on your walk down the garden and across the fields. Only this morning I thought how odd it was to have daffodils and cowslips flowering at the same time. Everything seems to be in a hurry now and they'll all bump into each other.

  10. Ahh Gina, so many pretty flowers blooming in your garden and across the fields! Perhaps nature just called you out for that walk?

Are you all considering a puppy?

  11. I had to say goodbye to my lab 18 months ago and still miss her dreadfully. I have just given up work and now that I am home an able to take on another the loss of my salary prohibits it :( I know what you mean about missing the walks whatever the weather!

  13. I like to walk everyday, too, to feel the sun on my face (if I'm lucky) and the breeze blowing through my hair. Good for you getting out today. The flowers are wonderful to see (we might have some in a month or so). Enjoy.

  14. Sorry to hear about the chooks. Is it a relief I wonder to have no creatures to care for a while? Or just a terrible disappointment not to have your own eggs? For myself, I cannot imagine life without a dog, although life with fewer dogs seems very attractive sometimes!

Cowslips ... I know of only one bank hereabouts where they grow, I will have to potter out that way and see if they are out :)

  15. A real feeling of Spring here Gina. Beautiful photos of those dainty cowslips. How lovely are they? I suddenly feel like we're getting there don't you? A swallow (yes, only one) returned to their nesting site in our garden yesterday, a week later than usual, but at least it is here and I hope more will follow. Now all we want is a bit of sun ... and some warmth please!
